Several times during this off-political year, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) has made coy statements about whether he plans to seek re-election. While always saying he’s planning to run, he simultaneously makes comments that suggest he could still opt to retire. As is the case in such situations, it is much better to monitor a prospective candidate’s actions rather than his words. Second quarter financial reports are beginning to dribble out ahead of the July 15th filing deadline, and it appears that Sen. Hatch raised more than $1 million during the preceding three months, giving him a campaign treasury of more than $4 million. These are numbers that clearly suggest he is actively running for an eighth term. If he does run and win, Sen. Hatch will become the longest-serving Republican Senator in American history when he completes almost the entire next term.
