It has long been rumored that Rep. Diane Black (R-Gallatin) will enter the open Tennessee Governor’s race, and she very well may. But, the Congresswoman hasn’t taken any such action to date. This apparently matters little to state Rep. Judd Matheny (R-Tullahoma), however. At the beginning of the holiday weekend, Mr. Matheny announced his congressional candidacy and says he is in the race whether Rep. Black decides to run for Governor or not. Most believe Matheny is getting a head start on what he thinks will be an open seat campaign, and the talk of opposing Rep. Black is simply a way to cement himself into the race. It is still probable that the 6th District will yield a crowded open seat Republican primary because Rep. Black is still expected to run statewide.
