Last week, two late September polls came to the forefront for the open 1st District, which is the most volatile CD in the country. Since 2006, this district has only re-elected its incumbent one time.
The first, from the American Research Group (9/21-26; 400 NH-1 likely voters), gave open seat Democratic nominee Chris Pappas, an Executive Councilor and businessman, a whopping 22-point lead, 55-33%. Then, the RightVoter firm, polling for the National Republican Congressional Committee (9/25-27; 400 NH-1 likely voters), found Republican former police chief Eddie Edwards (R) trending ahead by two percentage points, 42-40%. Now, Emerson College (10/10-12; 387 NH-1 likely voters via interactive voice response system and an online panel) finds Mr. Pappas’ lead to be only 40-35%. The closer polls make the most sense for a district that has swung wildly for the better part of ten years.
