The Monmouth University polling department administrators went into the field in their home state of New Jersey (7/6-9; 800 NJ adults; 758 NJ registered voters) to test the impending Governor’s race and, echoing the earlier Quinnipiac University study conclusions, found former US Ambassador and Wall Street executive Phil Murphy (D) holding a commanding lead over Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno (R). According to Monmouth, Murphy leads 53-26% even though his favorability rating is a rather lackluster 29:12% favorable to unfavorable. Ms. Guadagno is upside down on her approval score, 18:21%. With such a large unfamiliar number for Murphy among the respondents, it is unusual to see him holding such a large lead. This tells us that the political climate will likely be strong for Garden State Democrats this year, thus leaving Lt. Gov. Guadagno in a precarious and unenviable political position.
