Yesterday, the Justice Department reversed course on proceeding against Sen. Bob Menendez (D) on public corruption charges. The first attempt to convict him resulted in a mistrial and prosecutors were looking to begin again. But, the new presiding judge immediately dismissed seven of the pending 18 charges, which apparently resulted in the government being forced to cease action. Sen. Menendez was favored for re-election despite his legal situation, so this development should make him even stronger. Republicans are looking to pharmaceutical CEO Bob Hugin as a likely candidate.
