Despite former two-term Gov. Tim Pawlenty announcing that he is entering the Minnesota open race to re-capture his former position, 2014 Republican nominee Jeff Johnson, a Hennepin County Commissioner, is refusing to yield to the former state chief executive and showing further strength. Yesterday, former Lt. Gov. Carol Molnau (R), who served all eight years in Mr. Pawlenty’s Administration, endorsed Mr. Johnson. It is clear that Commissioner Johnson is gaining strength within the Republican Party convention delegate base, to the point that Pawlenty is indicating he will force a primary. His late entry into the race has allowed Johnson to commit major delegate support through the county caucuses well before it became known that Mr. Pawlenty might return to elective politics.
