The Democratic Party gubernatorial straw poll event is creating havoc within the party primary field. Because of his poor showing, former state House Speaker Paul Thissen ended his statewide campaign, as we reported here earlier in the week. Now, ex-St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman, thought to be one of the more serious Democratic candidates, has followed suit. Because he failed to reach what he considered an important benchmark in convention support, Mr. Coleman announced yesterday that he will no longer compete for the nomination.
The Democratic favorite appears to be US Rep. Tim Walz (D-Mankato), who was the first-place straw poll finisher. Remaining in the nomination campaign are state Auditor Rebecca Otto and state Reps. Tina Liebling (D-Rochester), who has the Bernie Sanders’ organization support, and Erin Murphy (D-St. Paul).
