Former Housing & Urban Development secretary Julian Castro has scheduled an announcement for Saturday, at which point he is expected to convert his presidential exploratory committee into a candidate committee. Obviously, Mr. Castro is a long shot for the party nomination, and he also has a potential timing problem.
As the former Mayor of San Antonio, he has a relatively significant base of support in Texas. With the state holding it’s presidential and statewide primary on March 3rd, he would have little opportunity of switching into a US Senate challenge against Sen. John Cornyn (R) if he fared badly in the earliest primaries. Therefore, the idea that he might switch campaigns, as some have suggested he might, is a tentative one at best when overlaying the scheduling quirk he faces.
