Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-Palm Coast/Daytona Beach) had long been considered a likely gubernatorial candidate. On Friday, he made an official announcement that he is joining the race. An outside PAC has already raised raised enough to put $2 million in an account to help elect the three-term Congressman to statewide office. But, he starts out considerably behind the top Republican fundraiser, Agriculture Commissioner and former Congressman Adam Putnam (R-Lakeland). The latest Florida financial disclosure reports find Mr. Putnam holding more than $15 million in a connected PAC.
Mr. DeSantis leaving his 6th Congressional District means 46 seats are now open in the House, 31 from Republican districts. The GOP is likely to hold this Atlantic coastal seat. President Trump recorded a 57-40% victory here in 2016, and Rep. DeSantis has averaged 59.4% in his three congressional elections.
