The open South Florida district that Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Miami) is vacating is commonly viewed as the Democrats’ best conversion opportunity in the country. With the candidate filing deadline still two months away, eight Democrats have announced including state Sen. Jose Javier Rodriguez (D-Miami), state Rep. David Richardson (D-Miami Beach), and former Circuit Judge Mary Barzee Flores.
Now, a new Republican enters the candidate field, bringing the GOP total to ten. Former television news anchor Maria Elvira Salazar, joins songwriter and non-profit organization executive Angela Chirinos, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Bruno Barreiro, and former Doral City Councilwoman Bettina Rodriguez-Aguilera, among others vying for the party nomination. The candidate filing deadline is May 4th for the August 28th state primary.
