So far, the California Democratic challengers keep declaring against perceived vulnerable Republican congressional incumbents. Yet another came forward yesterday, meaning 35 now in seven Golden State races. Businessman and former teacher Andy Thorburn (D) becomes the fifth Democratic candidate to challenge veteran Rep. Ed Royce (R-Fullerton), but the former’s political strategy is a bit different. Running what he is calling the “cell doors” campaign, Thorburn is brandishing the time he spent in jail after participating in an illegal strike when he was a union organizer. Now independently wealthy, Thorburn is contributing $2 million to his campaign effort. Congressman Royce, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, already has more than $3 million in his campaign account so we can expect to see the political fireworks fly in this north Orange County district.
