Sen. Jeff Flake (R) continues to draw political attention from potential Democratic and Republican opponents. It appears that both Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton (D) and state Representative and practicing physician Randy Friese (D-Tucson), the doctor who saved former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Tucson) from the tragic shooting incident that nearly claimed her life, both confirm they are considering entering the Senate campaign. With having so few targets in 2018, Democrats are virtually forced to make a major play in what is usually a reliably Republican state.
GOP former state Senator Kelli Ward, who held Sen. John McCain to a 51-40% victory in the 2016 Republican primary, has already been running for months. Stronger Republicans, such as state Treasurer Jeff DeWit, could still come forward.
