Former Arizona Attorney General Grant Woods, who served as a Republican but then later joined the Democratic Party, announced that he will not enter the 2020 special Senate election campaign. Mr. Woods indicated that his decision was based upon personal reasons and believing he is not liberal enough to win a Democratic primary.
The two remaining major potential challenger candidates are Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Phoenix) and former astronaut Mark Kelly, husband to ex-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Tucson). Appointed Sen. Martha McSally (R) is expected to run in the special election. The winner serves the balance of the late Sen. John McCain’s (R) current term and would be eligible to run for a full six-year stint in 2022.
