State Sen. Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont) announced yesterday that he will run for Congress next year but would retreat if Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Dublin), now a presidential candidate, returns to run for the House in the California primary. Another Democrat, Hayward City Councilwoman Aisha Wahab, is also in the race but has been less definitive about leaving the race if Rep. Swalwell were to come back.
The 15th District is an East San Francisco Bay seat that stretches east of the main metropolitan area. Sen. Wieckowski’s state legislative district overlaps part of the congressional territory, but the Senate district’s population anchor, and where the incumbent hails, is not part of the CD. With Rep. Swalwell’s chances in the presidential contest being described as a long shot, at best, it is probable that the Congressman will return to run for re-election.
