A few weeks ago, it appeared that San Antonio Democratic Congressman Joaquin Castro was just days away from announcing his challenge to Texas Sen. John Cornyn. But, actions may be speaking louder than words.
First, former Army helicopter pilot M.J. Hegar says she won’t stand aside for Rep. Castro in determining whether she ultimately decides to run for Senate after holding Rep. John Carter (R-Round Rock) to a 51-48% victory in November. Now, Mr. Castro’s latest campaign finance report reveals that he only raised $31,000 in the first quarter and has just over $88,000 in his campaign account. His paltry finance totals look even worse when remembering that Beto O’Rourke raised over $80 million in his Texas Senate bid against GOP incumbent Ted Cruz just last year. Therefore, it appears less likely that Rep. Castro will risk a safe House seat for a difficult Senate run.
