St. Sen. Sharif Street (D-Philadelphia), the son of former Philadelphia Mayor John Street, is expected to soon enter what will be an open 2022 US Senate campaign contest, according to a report in the Insider NJ political blog. Sen. Street was first elected to the legislature in 2016 and re-elected without opposition in November.
Another potential Democratic candidate is Lt. Gov. John Fetterman. Late last week he reiterated that he will not run for the open Governor’s position – Attorney General Josh Shapiro (D) appears to have the inside track toward the party nomination – but says he is considering entering the open US Senate campaign.
Sen. Pat Toomey (R) has already said he will not run for a third term in 2022. Gov. Tom Wolf (D) is ineligible to seek re-election to his own third term. Therefore, both major statewide positions will feature 2022 open races.
