Oregon Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-Canby/Salem) is coming under attack for originally opposing House Democratic efforts to impeach President Trump. Now, he supports the move. This did not stop fellow Democratic Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-Washington County) from being quoted as saying that Rep. Schrader “…ignores the overt white supremacy on display during the insurrection Wednesday.” The Polk County Democratic Party, an entity in the 5th District, has officially called for Rep. Schrader to resign.
The Oregon congressional situation will be difficult to predict for some months. The state looks to be gaining a seat in reapportionment, but with the national congressional district realignment being delayed from COVID, it will be even longer before we see how redistricting will affect the state. Therefore, with significant changes coming throughout the five-district state that should increase to six seats, it is very difficult to assess just how serious Mr. Schrader’s internal political difficulties will become. The Congressman, originally elected in 2008, won a seventh term this past November with a 52-45% victory margin over Republican Ann Courser.
