Last week, GOP special election candidate Jeff LaRe, a state Representative from Violet Township near the Columbus metro area, received an endorsement and independent expenditure promise from resigned Rep. Steve Stivers (R). This was enough to convince fellow GOP state Representative Brian Stewart (R-Ashville) to withdraw from the race, thus reducing the number of active Republican candidates to eleven.
Now, former President Donald Trump has entered the primary battle and endorsed a different candidate, Mike Carey, the chairman of the Ohio Coal Association. In addition to Mr. LaRe, two state Senators, a former state Representative, a local official, and an ex-local official help round out the Republican field. The special primary election is scheduled for August 3rd.
