A new Quinnipiac University poll (10/10-16; 873 NJ likely voters) sees New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez (D) leading former pharmaceutical company CEO Bob Hugin (R), 51-44%, but negative signs are ominous for the embattled incumbent.
First, his approval rating is again decidedly upside down (36:52% favorable to unfavorable) meaning his vote base is shaky.
Second, the Hugin campaign just launched an ad against him taking his words against Justice Brett Kavanaugh and drawing parallels to Menendez’s own sexual scandal involving Caribbean prostitutes, some who were underage. The scandal is old news, and Menendez was able to force the federal charges against him to be dismissed, but the ad, entitled “Hypocrisy,” seeks to re-introduce the controversy in a different context. The poll was taken before the new ad aired. Sen. Menendez must still be rated as the favorite to prevail in November, but this race continues to merit attention.
