Seven-term Iowa Congressman David Loebsack (D-Iowa City) announced on Friday that he will not seek re-election next year. Mr. Loebsack, a member of the House Energy & Commerce Committee, originally defeated then-Rep. Jim Leach (R) in 2006. While routinely being challenged in his “lean Democratic” southeastern Iowa district that features relatively close finishes, the Congressman has won consistently. In his seven victories, Mr. Loebsack scored an average winning percentage of 53.7.
The 2nd District electorate typically votes Democratic, but it did back President Trump with a 49-45% margin. In an open seat situation, Republicans will likely make this district a top conversion target.
