Phoenix voters will go to the polls tomorrow to elect a new Mayor in a special election. This contest will likely affect the impending US Senate race because one of the two Mayoral contenders, former Phoenix City Councilwoman Kate Gallego, is the ex-wife of US Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Phoenix) who is waiting in the wings reportedly announce his US Senate candidacy. Though the two are divorced, they remain political allies and the Congressman has deferred his Senate announcement to avoid upstaging her Mayoral campaign.
Ms. Gallego placed first in the special primary, which was held all the way back on November 6th. She faces fellow Democrat Daniel Valenzuela in Tuesday’s election. Ms. Gallego outpolled Mr. Valenzuela 45-26% in the nonpartisan primary but failed to obtain majority support. Since then, Mr. Valenzuela has earned backing from the Phoenix business establishment meaning Tuesday’s vote should be competitive.
