Today is also Election Day for Republican voters in eastern Utah, as they choose a party nominee for the November 7th general election. Because most of the counties are using a mail-only system and allowing ballots post-marked yesterday to be counted, election officials are estimating that as many as 15,000 ballots will not be tabulated until later in the week. Therefore, it is possible that we will not know the final outcome among Chris Herrod, a former state Representative who is the party-endorsed candidate, Provo Mayor John Curtis, and marketing executive Tanner Ainge for the next few days. The eventual Republican winner will meet Dr. Kathryn Allen (D) in the special general election. Dr. Allen was nominated in convention back in March. Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Alpine/Sandy) resigned the congressional position in June to pursue private sector and media opportunities.
