Westmoreland County Commissioner Gina Cerilli (D) announced that she will stand before the various Democratic county committee members who will soon choose the special election nominee for the race to replace resigning Rep. Tim Murphy (R-Pittsburgh). Once the seat is vacated, Gov. Tom Wolf (D) will schedule the special election, and then the various parties will convene their own internal process to choose a nominee. Therefore, no direct primary vote will occur. Former state teacher’s union president Mike Crossey is also expressing interest in running for the Democratic nomination.
The seat is overwhelmingly Republican, so the eventual GOP nominee will begin the special cycle as a strong favorite. Already, state Rep. Rick Saccone (R-Jefferson Hills), and state Sens. Guy Reschenthaler (R-Bethel Park), and Kim Ward (R-Greensburg) are announced Republican contenders.
