The surprise retirement announcement from Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-Rochester) has now set the wheels in motion about which Democrats will run to replace her. State Rep. and AFL-CIO leader Mark MacKenzie (D) formed a congressional exploratory committee this week. Several individuals say they won’t run. Former House Speaker Terie Norelli (D), state Rep. and former gubernatorial candidate Jackie Cilley (D), and state Sen. Dan Innis (R-New Castle) all say they will not enter the new open seat contest. Republican candidates include state Sen. Andy Sanborn (R-Bedford), former South Hampton Police Chief Eddie Edwards, and judicial reform activist Andy Martin.
