Businessman Stewart Mills (R) has held Rep. Rick Nolan (D-Crosby/Duluth) to consecutive close wins, with last November yielding a finish that found the two candidates languishing within one percentage point of one another. But, Mr. Mills announced yesterday that he will not make a third try in 2018, and went out with disparaging comments about how the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) handled his race last year.
One announced candidate is St. Louis County Commissioner Pete Stauber (R), but his $117,000 so far in cash-on-hand is not particularly impressive. Mr. Nolan originally served in Congress from 1975-81, only to return with a victory in the 2012 election cycle. He briefly considered entering the open 2018 Governor’s race, but appears content to again seek re-election. Originally considered a toss-up race, the early events suggest Mr. Nolan is in stronger re-election position than when the year began.
