Minnesota Rep. Rick Nolan (D-Crosby/Duluth) survived consecutive close re-election calls against businessman Stewart Mills (R) in the most recent elections, winning 50.1 – 49.6% in November, and 48-47% in 2014. In 2018, he may face a different opponent. Though Mr. Mills says he is considering running for a third time, St. Louis County Commissioner Pete Stauber announced yesterday that he will become a GOP candidate. Minnesota normally nominates through the party convention process, but candidates can petition onto the primary ballot. Mr. Stauber is a Duluth police commander who was elected to the St. Louis County Commission in 2012 after serving as a city councilman in Hermantown. Irrespective of whether Mills becomes a candidate, we can again expect a highly competitive congressional race in the Iron Range district next year.
