Though the Kentucky Governor’s election is not until next year, an official gubernatorial candidacy was announced yesterday. Attorney General Andy Beshear (D), son of former Gov. Steve Beshear (D), is now in the 2019 Governor’s race after winning his present office in 2015 by the barest of margins - just 2,194 (50.1 – 49.9%) votes from over 957,000 votes cast. Gov. Matt Bevin (R), who has not yet announced for re-election, is expected to run.
Also in the Democratic mix is state Rep. Attica Scott (D-Louisville). The freshman state legislator defeated a 32-year incumbent to win her position in 2016, and says she is “leaning toward” becoming a gubernatorial candidate. Secretary of State and former US Senate nominee Alison Lundergan Grimes (D) has also expressed interest in the 2019 gubernatorial campaign.
