Yesterday, Middletown Mayor Dan Drew (D) filed a gubernatorial exploratory committee even though incumbent Democrat Dannel Malloy has not yet said whether he will run for a third term. Mr. Drew maintains that the complex and arduous state campaign finance system mandates an early start if a candidate hopes to raise sufficient funds to compete. Therefore, it is not a certainty that Drew will stay in the race if Gov. Malloy decides to run again, but will pull his political trigger if the Governor’s race becomes an open seat contest.
